With the first quarter of 2013 behind us,.Healing Wings Adult and Youth Centre’s are enjoying a year of development and expansion. This does not come without challenges but with our eye’s fixed on the reward of seeing broken lives made whole, the staff and leadership of Healing Wings press forward towards this goal.
Healing Wings Youth Centre and Purpose College.
In keeping the Youth Centre therapeutic programme relevant and age appropriate, we have introduced a teen-friendly approach to the 12 Steps. This programme refines the established work in use at the Adult Centre, affording residents interactive ways to approach daily challenges, whilst appropriately dealing with life’s hurts. Residents exhibit a fuller understanding of God and an enthusiastic approach to life and recovery.
Purpose College has seen the majority of students excelling in their first term results. Incorporating schooling with a primary care treatment programme is challenging and residents are required to apply themselves in all aspects. It is encouraging to see growth in each resident, overcoming self-doubt through commitment to structure. Our teacher/ facilitator component has increased this year and students are receiving individual attention and encouragement in areas of struggle.
We are excited to announce the launch of our new Youth Centre website: www.healingwingsyouth.co.za. We would love to hear your feedback, please have a look at our Youth Centre site.
Healing Wings Adult Centre
The Adult Centre therapeutic programme continues to develop and fresh aspects are introduced regularly. Incorporating current and relevant group topics, whilst encouraging residents to challenge their default reactions to life’s challenges, is effective in the development of coping skills. Residents are prompted to learn from the experiences of their peers on the programme, through interactive groups and the sharing of life story’s and personal testimony.
Individual therapy is an integral aspect of the programme, providing residents with the platform to express themselves, develop trust and build goals.
By engaging in the therapeutic programme, a residents’ time at Healing Wings investigates the emotional, spiritual and physical aspects to recovery.
Skills Development
Skills Development is an exciting and ever-growing aspect of the Healing Wings programme. Joining the Culinary, Equine and wood work courses; 2013 has welcomed the Music and Stable Management courses.
The Healing Wings Music Academy offers an eight week course, teaching residents the basics of music, focusing on learning to play the guitar.
The Stable Management Course has been introduced, as an extension to the Equine Therapy Course , it equips horse lovers with the skills to effectively administer stables.
The Skills Development Courses create a holistic approach to recovery and ensures that recovered residents leave Healing Wings with skills which they can employ to become useful and productive members of their community and the economy that they are a part of.
Community
The mandate to ‘give back’ continues to be upheld at Healing Wings. Outreach teams are sent to the Healing Wings Mozambique facility on a monthly basis, to serve in the community of Bela Vista (Southern Mozambique).
The newly acquired Barberton Farm, has also been visited by a Healing Wings outreach clean-up teams, preparing the land as we begin to see God’s vision for that farm unfold.
Having over the last year started sowing into Sudwala ‘s Mankele Community, we have been blessed by the building of special relationships with all members of the Adult Literacy Project. Witnessing the growth and enthusiasm in these community members as they learn to read and write in English, is overwhelming! Healing Wings is building a medical clinic, in the community and we are presently in the process of registering the clinic with the Mpumalanga Department of Health. With no healthcare facilities currently in the district, most community members are not afforded the “luxury” of basic healthcare. Our vision is to change that and to make medical amenities available to all members of the community. During the clinic-building and registration process, Healing Wings transports community members in need of medical care to the Nelspruit Rob Ferriera hospital, on a monthly basis.
With 2013 officially underway, we are excited with the plans and we look forward to a year of over-coming challenges and taking ground for the Lord’s Glory.
